Grooming

Good grooming should start at an early age, which we have been doing since your pup was 4 weeks old but it is important that you continue this as soon as you acquire your puppy.

Biewer is considered non-shedding however they do occasionally drop hair and they will mat. You need to brush your dog every day or at least every other day. For that reason it is best to get the puppy used to it right off. We have had your puppy on the grooming table and s/he has had her or his ears trimmed with an electric clipper many times. H/she has also had nails clipped, brushed, bathed and had a sanitary clip (shaving under the tail and around the penis is a male to keep stool from gathering or caking and causing a major problem with the pup not being able to poo. This is important to check often as sometimes the stool will get caught in the hair and block the anal opening the dry. Then the poo cannot be expelled and an impaction can occur which is dangerous for any dog. It also keeps your pup cleaner. We highly recommend sanitary clips!

If your little Muffin is dragging his/her bottom on the ground it may be fleas, worms or clogged anal glands. It could also be from the hair feeling "funny" after a sanitary clip. Check out all these possibilities. Do not assume that because s/he was just clipped that it is not one of the other situations. This is true especially if it persists more than a day. You can have your vet show you how to express the anal glands if needed.

Make sure you brush their legs and feet as well. They may not start matting until 6 months or older however it will be impossible to do if you don't get them used to it young. You can bath the puppy, as often as needed (usually 2-4 times a month) however use dog shampoo that is gentle on the eyes and don't get water in the nose or ears. Make sure you dry the puppy with the blow dryer so they don't get cold. You can ask me about what shampoos I recommend.

You will need a pin brush, a slicker brush and a comb. Brush your puppy every few days including his feet. You can purchase these at Petco, Petsmart, most any pet store or at www.revivalanimal.com or www.petedge.com.

When you do this regularly is will make your life easier because he will know it is expected and will be familiar. You can wash your puppy when needed, usually 2-4 times a month. Just be sure and use a good dog shampoo. Try not to get water in their ears or nose. Be sure and dry your puppy with a towel and a blow dryer so they don't get chilled. Make sure they are completely dry before allowing them outside.

FLEAS

Keep your Biewer flea free. One flea can ruin a Biewer coat and make them very miserable. Make sure you check for fleas, and ticks as well, since these and other bugs can cause skin irritation and extreme scratching which can inflame and infect the skin. Check the ears, under the legs and around the neck and chest area when grooming. If you find any you can use Frontline or Advantage or check with your veterinarian.

EYES

The corners of the eyes should be cleaned every day if your Biewer tears a lot. Some Biewers tear more than others and cleaning this area will help prevent staining around the eyes. Tears will also cause the whisker hair to rot.

EARS

The ears of Biewers are considered prick, which means they stand up on their own. Always use care with your Biewers ears and do not use cotton swabs etc. If need be, use a good ear flush or powder. A dog's ear canal curves into the head which is why using q-tips or swabs are not recommended. Any unusual smell about the ear or continued scratching should be checked by a qualified veterinarian.

The hair on the Biewers ears are shaved 1/3 down from the tip in a V-shape. The hair on the pads of his feet should be kept clipped so he does not slip on slippery floors. Trim around his/her feet and coat as needed.

TEETH

For clean, white teeth and sweet smelling breath, clean your Biewer's teeth every day. It can be handled in numerous ways from the pet toothbrushes and tooth pastes on the market, to pretreated pads, to using a gauze pad wrapped around the finger. Gently wipe or brush the teeth front and back. Done daily you will find that the teeth stay much cleaner and healthier for years. Your veterinarian can recommend the best toothpaste to use. If the teeth get too dirty, you will need to have them cleaned by your veterinarian. I recommend a vet cleaning once or twice a year.

TOENAILS

Toenails should be cut regularly, at least every two weeks. If they are cut at the curve they should not bleed and if cut on an angle like the natural wear of the nail, it will help keep the cuticle back. It is good to have some quik-stop on hand in case there is any bleeding.

Although the Biewer is NOT a Yorkie, the way to groom is very much the same.

Below are a couple of sites I found on the internet (Thank you both so much) that will give you some BASICS…DO NOT RELY ON ANYONE SOURCE, DO Your HOMEWORK
